UCI BMX World Championships 2014, Rotterdam

After Birmingham and Copenhagen had defeated us in the bidding phase in previous years, we were successful on the third occasion: the BMX World Championships came to Rotterdam. Quite exciting to be honest, because this was a large event and we were fully responsible for it.

In July 2014, Ahoy was dominated by this young and spectacular Olympic sport. Our aim was to experience a fantastic week in the Port and City of Rotterdam together with around 2,500 athletes and 20,000 fans. And ‘we’ includes, in addition to Team TOC: Rotterdam Topsport, Ahoy, the Royal Dutch Cycling Union KNWU and the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport. Together we were able to bring this event to the Netherlands.

Team TOC organized the World Championships at its own expense and risk. In addition, we were responsible for all organisational aspects: from sales, subsidy applications and marketing to the media, accreditation and infrastructure. Especially for this large event, we have expanded our organisation with extra professionals in a number of crucial positions.

Eric Kersten is a familiar face to Rotterdam Topsport. When he proposed his idea of making a bid for the 2014 BMX World Championships a few years ago, we soon became enthusiastic as well. A trendy sport that suits Rotterdam perfectly, well organised and in close collaboration with a reliable, enthusiastic, hardworking partner: a man from Brabant with a Rotterdam character!
